SATURDAY EDITION: Around Northeast Georgia

*The Georgia Mountains Regional Commission’s Career Coach will visit the Good Samaritan Food Bank in Gainesville on Wednesday, December 18,  and Friday, December 20, 9 AM – 11 AM. The food bank is located at 1220 McEver Road.   Experts will be on hand to help job seekers search and apply for jobs, write resumes and cover letters, discern their career interests, and learn about funding for training.  There is no charge for these services.

*The Brenau University Downtown Center in Gainesville is currently playing host to an ongoing special exhibition of works titled, “Charles Webster Hawthorne: Paintings from the Collection of Doug and Kay Ivester.”  Hawthorne (1872-1930) was an American artist renowned for his portraits and genre paintings who was instrumental in the founding of the Cape Cod School of Art in 1899.

*State Senator John Wilkinson along with State  Representatives Terry Rogers and Chris Erwin will be on hand Tuesday morning, January 7, 7:30, at the North Georgia Technical College Dining Hall to talk with constituents prior to the start of the 2020 legislative session.  The Habersham County Chamber of Commerce is the sponsor, and AT&T will host the event.  Breakfast will be served.  Reservations:   [email protected] or call 706-778-4654. 

*Georgia Cancer Specialists is hosting the 18th annual Totes to Tots drive to collect backpacks and suitcases for foster children in Georgia. Donations of new backpacks, duffel bags and suitcases will be accepted at any GSC location in the state, including those in Athens, Blairsville, Blue Ridge, Cumming, and Jasper.  Click here for more information, including a list of all drop-off locations.

*The deadline is fast approaching for nominations for the Newtown Florist Club's 2020 "King Holiday Drum Major for Justice Award."   The deadline is Dec. 20.  Submit nominations to [email protected].

*There will be a called meeting Dec. 23 at 9:00 of the Forsyth County Board of Voter Registration and Elections at which the board will propose precinct changes (as described in the Public Notice published on November 20).  The meeting will be at the board's offices at 1201 Sawnee Drive, Cumming.

*Director of Facilities Michael Boyd of Toccoa has been named North Georgia Technical College’s Employee of the year.  .Allyson Smith, English instructor from Cleveland, was named the school's 2020 Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction. The Rick Perkins Award honors technical education’s most outstanding instructors and has been an ongoing statewide event since 1991.

*Harmony Baptist Church's Jesus Express Train and INK's (Interactive Neighborhood for Kids) Blue Sleigh are the winning floats from last weekend's Christmas On Green Street parade.

*And, did you know this year marks the 40th anniversary of the recall of all five members of the Hall County Board of Commissioners in a dispute over a decision to privatize the county's fire department, which included ambulance service, and disband the county-funded department?
