Basketball: Dawson County falls to GAC; Gibson scores 42 in boys win over GAC

NORCROSS — Dawson County could not hold onto an early lead in what ended up a 55-47 loss to Greater Atlanta Christian Thursday in a key Region 7-3A girls showdown.

The game was moved up from Friday to accommodate the GAC football team still playing in the Class 3A state playoffs.

Dawson County (4-4, 1-1 Region 7-3A) led 15-6 after a blistering start. But the Tigers were held to just 16 total points in the second and third quarters combined to fall behind 34-31.

The Spartans (3-6, 1-0 Region 7-3A) pulled within 29-24 by halftime and then extended its lead in the fourth quarter.

Maddie Anglin paced Dawson County with 21 points. But no one else scored in double figures. Marlie Townley had 9 points, Kirklyn Porter and Mariah Benson had 6 each, and Sophia D'Oliveira scored 5 for the Tigers.

Dawson County next will play host to Flowery Branch on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for noon.

Jasper Gibson scored 36 of his 42 points in the first half to lead the Tigers' rout of GAC Thursday night on the road.

Gibson was on fire in the first half, leading the Tigers (6-1, 2-0 Region 7-3A) to a 47-21 lead at the break. Gibson also pulled eight rebounds and dished out two assists in the win.

Campbell Reed finished with 8 points, and Eli Burruss ripped down 11 boards and chipped in 7 points.
