Gainesville Athletics Hall of Fame open up nominations for second class

GAINESVILLE — The Gainesville City School System currently is accepting nominations, through Jan. 1, to its second Gainesville Athletics Hall of Fame class.

The public can nominate in three different categories by clicking here.

-- ATHLETE: Any former student who participated in at least one year of varsity competition, and graduated from a Gainesville City high school (GHS, E.E. Butler, Fair Street) no fewer than 10 years ago, is eligible to be selected into the Gainesville Athletics Hall of Fame. All athletes considered must have made significant contributions while representing their school in varsity competition.

-- ATHLETIC SUPPORTER: An individual who has given outstanding service to athletics in Gainesville (i.e. coaching staff or administrative staff, media member, supporters or sponsors, volunteers, etc.)

-- TEAM: Individual teams that have achieved and performed at the highest level of competition.

Each inductee class with be comprised of one team, an athlete that graduated in the last 10-25 years, an athlete that graduated in the last 26-50 years, two athletes that graduated in the last 50-plus years and an athletic supporter.

The inaugural class inducted in April of 2019 included athletes Tom Paris Sr., Tommy Aaron, Tommy West, Cris Carpenter, Micah Owings, and Tasha Humphrey; coach Bobby Gruhn; and in the team category, the Fair Street Tigers football teams of 1956 and 1957.
