Gainesville Schools officials updated on potential Advanced Studies building

The Gainesville City School Board got an update Monday night on the first phase of the proposed changes to the campus, should an E-SPLOST be approved in March.

A few months ago, the resolution was approved to move forward with architectural renderings and site plans. Facilities Director and Superintendent Jeremy Williams presented the plans to the board.

"As we look at that campus, that Advanced Studies building kind of merges and marries some of our CTAE programs, such as construction, engineering and technology manufacturing, healthcare science and merges that with some of our academic in the math and science areas," said Williams. "So our Advanced Studies building is kind of going to be that welcome onto Gainesville campus, take some of our hands-on CTAE courses and our high academic courses and just merge them together.

The building will be located on the site of the old Parks and Rec building, Williams said. "As you come on to Gainesville High School campus, right besides Bruster's, you will be looking right at that building."

Inside the building, there will be CTAE labs, as well as healthcare and STEM labs and university level science labs. The main corridor on the first floor will be glass, allowing a look into the labs on that floor. There will also be an admin suite and work-based learning suite.

The target start date, if the ESPLOST is approved, would be April or May.

As for the archway that leads people into campus, Williams said don't fret about it yet. "As of right now, we're going to keep the arch where it is," said Williams. "The only discussion may be do we move it somewhere else on campus. What we want to do is be able to have the arch in a way where you know you're entering Gainesville High School campus."
