CLARKESVILLE – The City of Clarkesville will hold a special election in March 2020 to fill the council seat just vacated by John Mitchell.
Mitchell submitted his resignation to the mayor and council, and it was approved at the council’s Nov. 19 work session.
Discussing his resignation, Mitchell said, “Residency restrictions apply. Unfortunately, I’m in a situation where I’m moving.”
But Mitchell isn’t leaving the area, only the city, so he plans to still frequent Clarkesville.
“I love Clarkesville, and I still will,” Mitchell said. “And I’m still going to be active in the community because this is my second hometown.”
When Mitchell looks back on his time on the city council, he is proudest of seeing Clarkesville continue to develop its identity and sense of community.
“I think it’s really the continuation of what was already a good thing, from the standpoint of how the people are in the town and the way that the community comes together for events, and just the ability to walk around the square and see all your friends and co-workers,” Mitchell said. “It’s a great atmosphere. I love it.”
