The Gwinnett County Police Depart released limited details about a fatal wreck turned hit-and-run that occurred mid-afternoon Thursday.
According to authorities, at approximately 12:40 p.m. officers responded to Winters Chapel Road at its intersection with Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in reference to a wreck with injuries.
When officers arrived at the scene, they learned that a red pickup truck had collided with a white sedan according to Gwinnett County Police Spokesman Corporal Wilbert Rundles.
"The driver of the white sedan sustained serious injuries and died as a result of those injuries. Investigators spoke to the driver of the red pickup truck and learned that he was giving someone a ride from a nearby location when he had an altercation with occupants in a black SUV," Cpl. Rundles said. "At some point during the altercation at least of the occupants in the SUV produced a gun and shots were fired. The driver of the red pickup truck fled the scene and traveled south on the PIB access road. He ran the red light at the intersection and collided with the white sedan."
Cpl. Rundles said the red pickup truck had two other occupants inside during the time of the wreck — an adult female and a young juvenile.
The adult female fled the collision scene before police arrived at the scene. The juvenile, according to law enforcement, was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
"The driver of the red pickup truck was ultimately arrested and charged with Vehicular Homicide First Degree. The black SUV fled the scene before police arrived," Cpl. Rundles said.
According to authorities, the identities are being withheld due to the active investigation and pending next-of-kin notification.
