Merrianne Dyer, former superintendent of the Gainesville City School System, was recognized recently as a recipient of the Pioneers in Education award sponsored by Pioneer RESA. Dyer was one of the fifteen individuals honored at the 2nd Annual 2019 Pioneers in Education Awards ceremony.
Individuals from each of the school districts within the Pioneer RESA region were recognized for their efforts in going above and beyond in their advocacy for education. Whether providing exceptional instruction, strengthening community support, or rendering assistance to students and families in need, these individuals have made a tremendous impact within their communities. Award recipients could serve in various capacities to be eligible for the award such as a teacher, administrator, community member, business leader, or anyone within the school district who has positively influenced education.
A Gainesville High School alum, Dyer served as superintendent of Gainesville City Schools from 2008 until her retirement in 2014. Prior to becoming superintendent, she was an assistant principal at Enota Elementary and principal at Fair Street Elementary School. Throughout her career in education, Dyer frequently presided as the “voice” for those underrepresented within the Gainesville community resulting in the receipt of financial and intangible support not possible without her active involvement. Her interpersonal relationships with various organizations enabled her to utilize her expertise in education to accumulate resources for Gainesville City School System, which proved to be advantageous for the entire community.
“Dr. Dyer is a remarkable visionary who has selflessly given her time, energy, and support in pursuit of better opportunities for Gainesville City School System,” stated Lynn Jones, GCSS Communications Coordinator. “Her tireless work and unrelenting advocacy for quality education exemplify her as a true Pioneer in Education.”
As AccessWDUN reported earlier this week, Nath Morris, a longtime member of the Hall County Board of Education, was named the county school system's Pioneer in Education recipient for 2019.
