A Medal of Honor recipient with Gainesville ties has written a book about his wartime experiences in Afghanistan that left him severely wounded, but there's more to the book, according to the publisher.
Kyle Carpenter was a Marine Lance Corporal in 2010 when he was severely wounded by a grenade blast
Carpenter received the Congressional Medal of Honor by President Obama four years later in a White House ceremony. At the time, Obama noted that Carpenter had placed himself between the grenade and a fellow Marine, an act which likely saved the life of Carpenter's colleague.
Harper Collins, the publisher, describes the book, "You Are Worth It: Building A Life Worth Fighting For," as “a memoir about the War in Afghanistan and Kyle's heroics, yes, but it also is a manual for living. Organized around the credos that have guided Kyle's life (from “Don't Hide Your Scars" to “Call Your Mom"), the book encourages us to become our best selves in the time we've been given on earth.”
Though he eventually moved to South Carolina where he finished high school, Carpenter spent part of his childhood in Gainesville. Friends recalled in an earlier story that he attended McEver Elementary School and West Hall Middle School as well as First Baptist Church on Green Street.
