Wolves use quick start to hold off Cedar Shoals

BUFORD — For all the talk of the Buford defense and its punishing ground game in 2019, it was the sometimes-maligned the Wolves’ passing game that set the tone Friday night against Cedar Shoals in the first major Region 8-5A battle of the season.

Quarterback Jarvis Evans connected with Jake Pope on a 77-yard bomb on the first play of the game to ignite a 17-point opening period that what would finish as a 31-13 victory for the Class 5A No. 1-ranked Wolves at Tom Riden Stadium.

Buford (7-0, 2-0 Region 8-5A) never looked back and then turned things over to the defense. The Wolves held the Jaguars (4-3, 0-2 Region 8-5A) to just 136 total yards, and just 86 on the ground, which is 130 yards below their season average,. Cedar Shoals’ dynamic running back Jerdavian Colbert, who came in averaging just under 100 yards and one touchdown rushing a game, managed just 34 yards and no scores on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Buford ground attack churned out 177 yards on the ground, with Gabe Ervin leading the way with 100 yards. Elijah Turner had 75 yards rushing scored twice.

The Wolves will play host to Loganville (2-5, 2-0 Region 8-5A) next week. The Red Devils shocked Clarke Central on Friday
