Man dies in fiery crash in Gilmer County Friday morning

By B.J. Williams

A man was killed in a fiery crash in Gilmer County early Friday morning, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Sgt. E. Bonaparte with GSP Post 27 in Blue Ridge said the fatal crash happened around 1 a.m. on Clear Creek Road near Fendley Road in Ellijay.

The victim, described as a white male, was badly burned in the single-vehicle crash. Bonaparte said the victim's identity is unknown at this time.

Bonaparte said the investigation so far indicates the victim, who was the only person in the vehicle, failed to negotiate a curve in the road and traveled off the roadway and hit a utility pole, splitting it in half. He then continued to travel off the road into a tree.

Bonaparte said speed appears to be the main contributing factor in the fatal accident.

Troopers investigating the crash were on the scene for almost five hours.
