Trail closed near Buford Dam on Lake Lanier

Hikers are prohibited from using the Laurel Ridge Trail near Buford Dam in Gwinnett County.

Nick Baggett, Natural Resource Manager with the Army Corps of Engineers, said they walk the trails monthly to check for any safety issues.

" We decided to close it after taking a look at it with our contractor," Baggett said. "We will be doing trail maintenance, taking out some of the trees that may have fallen, are dead, or are leaning so we can make it safe for the public."

Baggett said they will also replace some damaged boards on the boardwalk.

He said sometimes people ignore the barricades and signs and go into closed areas, but that can be dangerous. "Do not enter those areas. We've closed those areas for a reason, whether it be replacing boards, replacing areas, doing trail maintenance, or creating a trail maintenance plan," he explained. "We do not want the public in those areas."

Baggett said three-quarters of the trail remains open to the public.

There's no date for when that will be reopened.
