Huddle House employee critically injured in Wednesday-night shooting

By B.J. Williams

A restaurant employee shot multiple times Wednesday night remained in critical condition at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, according to Gainesville police.

Sgt. Kevin Holbrook identified the victim as Michael Benham, 60, of Lula.

The incident happened just before midnight at the Huddle House on Jesse Jewell Parkway in the New Holland area.

"The initial investigation indicates an unknown subject or subjects entered the business. They shot a male employee [Benham] multiple times," Holbrook said. He said Benham is expected to survive his injuries.

Holbrook said a woman working at the restaurant managed to escape and get help at a neighboring convenience store.

There were no customers in the restaurant at the time of the shooting, according to Holbrook.

At this point in the investigation, police are unsure of a motive in the shooting; they do not have suspect descriptions yet.

"Our Criminal Investigations Division is investigating this case," Holbrook said. "As always, we encourage anyone with information to please contact 911 or the Gainesville Police Department."
