Dahlonega state senator pre-files bill to expand broadband service

By B.J. Williams
A state senator from North Georgia says it's time to make broadband services more accessible, especially to Georgians who live in rural areas.

Rep. Steve Gooch of a Dahlonega has pre-filed a bill ahead of the session to expand internet services.

Gooch's Senate Bill 2 would allow the 41 EMCs in Georgia to offer broadband services to their 4 million customers. EMCs typically serve customers in the state's more rural areas.

"It is my belief that competition in the marketplace will enhance customer choices and affordability of this much needed service throughout Georgia," Gooch wrote in a social media post.

Gooch said he and other legislative leaders believe expansion and improvement of broadband services will be a primary issue in the 2019 legislative session.
