The Philadelphia Romanian Church on Old Peachtree Road in Suwanee is moving ahead with the addition of a private elementary school on its campus.
According to a letter intent sent to Gwinnett County commissioners from Pinnacle Land Development, the school would be developed in phases, starting with Pre-K and kindergarten programs.
10 staff members would be hired at that point, and the school would accommodate 50-60 children.
Phase 2 would happen when the students from Phase 1 graduate into first grade, continually growing as the first class reaches fifth grade — at which point the school would employ 20 staff members to oversee 150-180 children at the school, which will operate Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Last week, Gwinnett commissioners approved a special use permit for the project, which also calls for the construction of a gymnasium on campus.
"The gymnasium will consist of about 7,400 square-feet," said Anthony Wiggins, an engineer representing the owner at a recent public hearing.
The originals plans for the church, built in 2002, called for an education building, though it never came to fruition. Church officials said they will not need to add any parking spaces to accommodate the new additions.
Gwinnett County commissioners approved the special use permit unanimously.
