Forsyth County leaders take steps to move historic Denmark clinic

The historic Denmark clinic in Forsyth County may be moving soon.

During a recent work session, County Attorney Ken Jarrard asked county leaders to clarify their plans for a piece of property near the new Denmark school under their control due to a lengthy lease included in an intergovernmental agreement with the school board.

He said he felt commissioners might be confused about their role in the project and reminded them of, "...the expectation that the county would either provide or work in conjuction with perhaps the historical society or a private developer to relocate the historic Denmark house to this .5 acre parcel."

District 3 Commissioner Todd Levent clarified that it was only the clinic that would be moved, not the entire house. He pointed out that the clinic was a free-standing structure and should not require a lot of land.

Jarrard tried to clarify to the board that the senior staff needed direction from them in regards to what type of site work, utilities, and parking, if any, the board planned for the project.

"What are we doing," Jarrard asked the group, "because literally what the board of education has said to us at this point is, 'It's all yours boys. Knock yourself out'."

The board briefly expressed confusion due to their expectation that the school board would handle the details of utilities and parking if commissioners moved the building.

Ultimately, commissioners voted to direct senior staff to do some preliminary groundwork to offer the board options for both design and cost.
