Oakwood City Council approves variance request for Chick-fil-A awning

Following a public hearing Monday night, the Oakwood City Council approved a variance request by the Robson Crossing Chick-fil-A for an awning at the fast food restaurant's drive-thru.

The restaurant at 3405 Atlanta Highway requested a variance of minimum buffer and setback requirements, encroaching on the 60-foot setback by 18 feet 9 inches to install the awning. No one spoke for or against the variance request. The Oakwood Planning Commission recommended approval and Council voted unanimously to approve.

"It had to go through the variance process primarily due to the fact the DOT right-of-way that had been acquired over the past 10 years. They would need a setback ordinance to build that and that's what they applied for and that's what Council approved," said City Manager Stan Brown. "It still gives plenty of separation from the building and the road, so that's not an issue."

Brown added the awning installation would not change the landscape of the lot. 

Meanwhile, the council tabled a rezoning request for Bill Stark Properties, Inc. at 2988 Frontage Road from Highway Business to Planned Residential Development. An error in legal advertising signage led to the decision. Council will take up the request on Sept. 10.
