Turner edges Russell for Late Model victory at Hartwell

With storms lighting up the sky all around Hartwell, Georgia on Saturday night, Clayton Turner did something few others have been able to do this season at Hartwell Speedway.

He outran Bubba Russell to storm to the win in the combined Limited and Crate Late Model feature.

Turner, who hails from Toccoa, Georgia, started his journey to victory lane by setting fast time in qualifying, with Russell timing in second quickest around the 3/8-mile clay oval.

That gave Russell the preferred outside line for the start of the feature, but that mattered little to Turner, who got a great jump off the drop of the green flag. That gave Turner the chance to power his way into the lead on the opening lap.

Russell tried time and again to find a lane around Turner, but to no avail. Turner held him off to score the victory,

Russell finished in second, with Drew Collins in third, Dustin Mincey in fourth and Brad Rachels in fifth.

In other action, Ervin Atkinson drove to the lead in the Hobby feature, and held off Shun Thomas to take the win. Chris Cape finished in third, with Joe Cash in fourth and Alex Yarbrough in fifth.

C.S. Roberts was flagged the winner in the Modified Street feature, but failed to pass post-race technical inspection. That handed the victory to Kyle Gordon, who nipped Sterling Helm in the closing laps. Helm was second, with Chase Burdette in third, Preston Strickland in fourth and Johnny Pilgrim in fifth.

The Stock V8 feature was also decided in post-race tech. Evan Brown was first under the checkered flag, but after failing inspection, Rocky Jones was moved to the win. Stephen House, Chris Brown, Paul Moore and Shannon Duck rounded out the top five.

LeeBo Bridges was awarded the victory in the rain shortened Stock Four feature. Dustin Bailes finished second, with Jacob Rhome third, Pete Whitley fourth and Caleb Nicholson fifth.

The Up Front feature was rained out, and will be made up on the next race night, with a separate race being run as well.

Hartwell Speedway is scheduled to return to action on Saturday, July 28. For more information, visit Hartwell-Speedway.com.
