Maintenance and construction crews with the Georgia Department of Transportation will begin extending the culvert underneath State Route 17/75 near Helen this week.
In order to get this repair work complete, single lane closures will occur near Andrews Cove Campground between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., according to a GDOT press release. This work will take place in stages over the next three months.
The project will initially remove the historical stones from the arches of the culvert and after construction activities, they will be put back. Georgia DOT says it has worked closely with department historians to ensure the stones are being removed properly to preserve history. The project will also add a 20-foot shoulder, ten feet of which will be paved.
