Just minutes after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld President Donald Trump's travel ban Tuesday morning, Republican Congressman Doug Collins of Gainesville was a guest on Fox News, offering his reaction to the ruling.
"The Supreme Court did what it should have done," Collins told Fox News anchor Sandra Smith. "[They affirmed] the President does have the authority, he has the latitude, to look into national security and the best interest of our country...they said this [the executive order for the ban] is proper. The Supreme Court made the right ruling here."
Collins told Smith he thinks the bigger issue is enacting overall immigration reform, and he believes upholding the ban on certain travelers from Muslim countries is a stepping stone.
"We need to make sure it's [reform] done in a proper way with security, with compassion," Collins said. "We need to say 'what can we do to actually solve this problem?' so we can have good, safe, legal immigration."
Collins also said he thinks Republicans and Democrats need to join forces on creating immigration policy, rather than playing politics with the issue.
