Gainesville will soon play host to a New York Times best-selling children's author.

Carmen Deedy will visit First Baptist Church of Gainesville for a "Night of Storytelling" on June 20th. The author of The Library Dragon and The Cheshire Cheese Cat looks to shine a light on the importance of literacy, according to the event's organizers.

Deedy has been advocating recently on behalf of the larger Get Georgia Reading campaign.

Deedy, a Cuban refugee who grew up in Decatur, Ga., has garnered worldwide praise not only as an author, but as a television host and lecturer.

She is the host of four-time Emmy winning program, Love That Book, on the Gwinnett County Public Schools television network, and has given talks at TED and TEDx conferences.

Hall County Schools Media Coordinator Kristi Crumpton spoke to the significance of Deedy's visit.

"It speaks volume for someone like Carmen Deedy to see the importance of what we're doing here. I think it's tremendous affirmation to get that from her," said Crumpton in an interview with AccessWDUN.

Deedy will be joined by Georgia First Lady Sandra Deal, who will discuss the Gardens on Green and its impact on the communtity.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Literacy Garden at the Gardens on Green Street. The Literacy Garden serves lessons to all kindergarten students in the school system.

Tickets are $5 for school age children and $20 for adults. They can be bought here.
