Bubba Russell powers to Hartwell Late Model victory

Bubba Russell came to Georgia’s Hartwell Speedway on Saturday night with one goal in mind – taking home a Late Model win from the 3/8-mile clay raceway.

The Comer, Georgia speedster did just that, leading wire-to-wire en route to the victory.

Russell started the night by setting fast time in qualifying for the combined Limited and Crate Late Model divisions.

When the green flag flew for the 25 lap feature, Russell powered to the lead, with Jimmy Johnson in pursuit. Johnson tried several times to find a way around Russell during the opening laps, but Russell was finally able to move away.

From there, Russell drove on to the victory. Johnson had to settle for second, with Adam Partain in third, Dustin Mincey in fourth and Ashley Poole in fifth.

It was a special night for the raceway, which will celebrate it’s 50th anniversary next year, as the vintage racers of the NVRA made their first visit to Hartwell Speedway. Randy Woodard drove his Ford Falcon to the victory in the Full Bodied Late Model feature, while Woody Callaway took his Chevy powered “Skeeter” to victory lane in the second feature.

In other action, Shane Yarbrough held off Scott Slama for the win in the Hobby feature. Shun Thomas finished in third, with Joe Cash in fourth and Jimmy Mason in fifth.

Kyle Gordon held off Preston Strickland to score the victory in the Modified Street feature. Tyler Canup finished third, with Johnny Pilgrim fourth and Jennifer Everett fifth.

Evan Brown edged out Keith Teasley for the win in the Stock V8 feature, with Steven House in third and Paul Moore in fourth.

Jeffery Lord bypassed Ryan Boles late in the Stock Four feature, and went on to take the victory. Boles, Pete Whitley, Dustin Bales and Arti Ridgeway rounded out the top five.

Wayne Chapman powered to the lead on the start of the Up Front feature, and held the lead the rest of the way en route to the win. North West finished in second, with Randy Shaw in third, Joel Powell, Sr. in fourth, and Andrew Smith in fifth.

Hartwell Speedway returns to action on Saturday, May 19 for the Wendell Rousey Memorial Race. For more information, visit Hartwell-Speedway.com.
