STATE CHAMPS: Buford girls, Riverside claim team crowns on big final day for area athletes at state

By AccessWDUN Staff

The Buford girls and Riverside Military boys each ran away with team titles on Saturday in their respective classes at the GHSA state track and field championships at separate venues.

The Lady Wolves claimed three individual gold medals -- setting two new state records in the process -- and one second place finish in the Class 5A meet at Carrollton to hold off Jackson (Atlanta) 73-66.

Meanwhile, the Eagles notched two individual victories and stormed to the 1A Private crown 93-68 over Athens Academy in Rome.

Class AA also saw a strong northeast Georgia presence at its finals in Albany, as Rabun County's boys finished second with 41.5 points and Banks County fourth with 35 points.

North Hall also took home an individual title, as Devan Crow notched his second gold of the weekend, winning the Class AAA 8-800 meters (1:56.71) in Albany. Crow also claimed the 1,600 earlier in the weekend.

The most impressive performances came in Carrollton, however, as the Lady Wolves' 4x100 relay (Trinity Price, Alexa Rossum, Trinity Rossum and Kimberly Harris) set a new state record in 45.26 seconds. Harris still had enough in the tank to set another record in the 400 meters later in the day (53.31), and Alexa Rossum also took first in the 100 meters (11.78).

Riverside's 4x400 relay also finished atop the podium (3:23.16), as did James Seymour in the 800 meters (1:56.90).
