Dahlonega man killed in Sunday night crash

By B.J. Williams

A 21-year-old man was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Lumpkin County Sunday night.

The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) said Russell James Ford of Dahlonega was alone in his pick-up truck on Copper Mines Road when he apparently failed to negotiate a left-hand curve and traveled onto the west shoulder of the road.

"Mr. Ford overcorrected his steering causing the Ford Ranger to rotate counter-clockwise and travel across both lanes onto the east shoulder. The Ford Ranger then rotated clockwise, traveled down an embankment, and struck a large tree with its driver’s door and roof before coming to rest facing south," said SFC Curtis Bradshaw in an email statement.

Ford was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bradshaw said Ford was wearing his seat belt, and he said the airbag in the vehicle deployed.

Troopers were called to the scene at 9:10 p.m. Sunday, according to the GSP report.
