Baseball: Despite light schedule, some huge region matchups on tap

With Spring Break for many area school systems this week, the prep baseball schedule is the lightest of the season. However, what it lacks in quantity it more than makes up for in quality.

Gainesville and Lanier, the top two teams in Region 8-6A after the first two weeks of region play, will open a three-game series in Sugar Hill. The Red Elephants are red-hot having won four straight since dropping their firs two region games of the season against Winder-Barrow. Meanwhile, Habersham Central will open a three-game series against the Bulldoggs in Mount Airy on Monday as the Raiders try to climb back up the standings.

In Region 7-3A, unbeaten North Hall and East Hall will to begin a three-games series in Rabbittown on Monday. The Vikings are coming off a doubleheader loss to Fannin County and fell back to third place but can ge back within a game of first place with a series sweep.

Jefferson in Region 8-4A can maintain its first place lead as the Dragons open a three-game series with last place Oconee County in Watkinsville on Monday.

Regions 7-4A, 8-2A, and 8-5A are taking the week off from region action.
