No. 2 UNG softball completes PBC sweep at Lander

GREENWOOD, S.C. — Kylee Smith earned a win and a save as the No. 2 University of North Georgia softball team swept Lander Saturday afternoon at Doug Spears Field. With the 7-0 and 5-2 wins, the Nighthawks improve to 40-1 and a perfect 10-0 in league play.

GAME ONE
Smith was dominant in the circle, scattering two hits and a walk across the seven innings, striking out nine Bearcats along the way. She improved to 21-0 on the season.

North Georgia got started in the first inning, loading the bases with one out for Kaylyn Anthony and Lexi Duncan to each get RBI singles to take a 2-0 lead. The Nighthawks struck again in the inning with two outs as Jordan Deep drew a walk to bring home another run.

After an Alishia Frierson sacrifice fly in the third to give UNG a 4-0 lead, North Georgia put on more runs in the seventh, starting with a Marley Stowers solo shot. After the next two batters were retired, Anthony and Kali Turner singled, bringing up Frierson, who tripled to bring the game to its final score.

GAME TWO
Lander struck first in the latter half of the twinbill as Chandler Carey hit a two-run homer to give the Bearcats a 2-0 lead through four innings.

North Georgia scored the final five runs of the game, all in the top of the fifth. Duncan led off the inning with a single before three straight doubles gave UNG a 3-2 lead. After a Stowers walk, Brittany Gilliam doubled to score the final two runs of the game. From there, Amber Johns and Smith combined to seal the win and the sweep.

NOTES
- Duncan led the Nighthawks in the doubleheader, going 4-for-6 with two runs scored and a RBI.

- North Georgia has now won 40 or more games in eight of the last nine seasons.

- UNG has won 25 straight over the Bearcats.

NEXT UP
The Nighthawks will take on Claflin on Wednesday, April 4. First pitch on Military Appreciation Day is set for 3 p.m.
