Top of Georgia official: 'Confident we can recover from this'

HELEN — Just more than 36 hours after a severe storm struck Top of Georgia Airstream Park on Ga. 75 north of Helen, park and emergency management officials have provided updates on the results of Saturday night’s weather.

Bill Wild of Top of Georgia said the most important thing is that the storm resulted in no injuries or loss of life.

“And surprisingly, there was very little damage to the Airstreams,” Wild said. “It is interesting how the aerodynamic shape of Airstreams allows high wind to flow around them. Tornadoes in RV parks often destroy more common flat-sided trailers.”

White County Public Safety Director David Murphy reported Monday morning that he and Georgia Emergency Management Agency officials will do site visits to the damaged area Monday afternoon, but noted officials from the National Weather Service in Peachtree City will not be able to visit the area until the current storm threat is over.

Emergency Management and Weather Service officials evaluate storm damage to determine what type weather resulted in the damage, whether a tornado or other form of storm.

“We can expect to see them Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on what happens today and through the overnight hours,” Murphy said.

While Top of Georgia Airstream Park sustained heavy damage to some structures, Wild is thankful for how quickly agencies and others responded to assist.

“We are encouraged by the rapid response of Habersham EMC, Windstream, and several local repair businesses to our plight,” Wild said. “Initial assessment revealed that we lost several maintenance buildings, but we are confident that we can recover from this. The park is closed until we deem it safe to reopen.”
