Baseball: Jefferson blanks Branch behind Hickox; Lumpkin takes region win

JEFFERSON — Jefferson, playing its first game in a week, snapped a two-game losing streak with a 4-0 win over Flowery Branch at home on Wednesday.

Patrick Hickox tossed a complete-game shutout scattering four hits and striking out six.

The Dragons scored three runs in the second and one in the third despite just four hits of their own. Kade McNally had a big two-run single for Jefferson. Justin Cole, Clayton Jones, and Sammy Elegreet all had one hit for Jefferson.

Preston Felt took the loss for the Falcons yielding four runs on just four hits and two walks in five innings. He also fanned 10 of the 22 batters he faced.

Andrew Curtin had two hits and T.J. Armstrong and Blake Coxworth had one hit each for Flowery Branch (5-8) which dropped its second straight contest.

Jefferson (7-3) will take on Gainesville on Thursday in amakeup game from last week. Flowery Branch will take on Pickens at the University of North Georgia on Thursday.

UNION COUNTY 1

The Indians scored 12 unanswered runs over the final four innings to take their second Region 7-AAA victory on the road.

Union County (5-5, 0-2 Region 7-AAA) took the early lead with a run in the first. It stayed that way until Lumpkin (7-5, 2-3) took the lead for good with a five-run third inning. The Indians added three more in the fourth and two each in the fifth and sixth innings to invoke the 10-run Mercy Rule.

Matthew Grizzle got the win for the Indians allowing one run on three hits in a complete-game effort. Cole Davis took the loss for Union County.

Dalton Stephens and Connor Pierce each had multi-hit games for Lumpkin County -- Stephens cracking a bases-loaded triple in the top of the third to put the Indians in front 5-1. Stephens finished with 4 RBI. Braylen Chastain and Jacob Martin also collected extra-base hits for Lumpkin. Chastain's fourth-inning double drove in two to make it 7-1. 

The two teams will complete their three-game series on Friday in Dahlonega
