Someone set fire to the Sandy Cross Community Center overnight Sunday, and state officials are working to determine the person(s) responsible.
“The fire has been ruled arson,” said Glenn Allen, spokesman for Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens on Wednesday.
The Sandy Cross Community Center, located on Ga. 51 about seven miles from Interstate 85 in Franklin County, formerly functioned as Sandy Cross School and at one time as an orphanage.
Firefighters from a number of area fire departments spent the day Monday putting out the fire, which destroyed the landmark structure.
Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call (800) 282-5804. A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information that leads the arrest and conviction of the arsonist(s).
