Former Buford coach Simpson may be headed to Miami football

Jess Simpson's coaching career is expected to continue its evolution soon.

According to multiple published reports the former Buford High football coach and current Falcons assistant is set to become the new defensive line coach for the Miami Hurricanes and head coach Mark Richt.

Simpson spent 2017 with the Atlanta Falcons as a defensive assistant after a brief stint with Georgia State. Prior to that Simpson coached Buford football into a national powerhouse, inlcuding seven state titles, 10 region crowns, and a 164-12 record as head coach from 2005-2016. Simpson was promoted to head coach at Buford after serving as an assistant under Dexter Wood.

Simpson's winning percentage of .931 at Buford was among the best in Georgia high school history. The state's all-time winningest coach is Larry Campbell of Lincoln County, who owns a .847 winning percentage (477-85-3), including 11 state titles over his 42 campaigns, while Valdosta's Wright Bazemore finished with an .831 percentage (264-50-7) and 14 state championships won between 1946-1971.
