Gainesville man dies, 3 others hurt in Lula area wreck

A Gainesville driver was killed and three other people were injured in a two-vehicle crash on Ga. 365 at Athens Street in Lula Thursday afternoon.

Georgia State Patrol Sgt. Auston Allen said Daniel Esparza, 30, died in the crash.  Authorities believe Esparza failed to yield to northbound traffic when turning from Athens Street to proceed south on 365.

"No alcohol or drugs were suspected, and seat belts were in use," Allen said.

Two people were riding with Esparza in a 2016 Honda Civic when the crash occurred at roughly 5:30 p.m.  Lucia Casas, 50, and Jennifer Esparza, 16, both of Lula, were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment.

Allen described Casas' injuries as, "incapacitating," and Jennifer Esparza's as, "non-incapacitating."

The second driver, Colin McDonough, 59, of Clarkesville, was also taken to the medical center in Gainesville with, "incapacitating injuries."

Allen said McDonough was driving north on 365 when his 1996 Chevrolet Blazer collided with Esparza's car.  McDonough was traveling alone.

Allen said the patrol does not expect to file charges in the case.

"Our Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is doing assistance in an investigation.  Obviously the at-fault party was the deceased, and therefore, at least at this point, it's a non-prosecutable fatality."
