By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

Record high temperatures for the date fell in several places in Georgia Thursday, including Gainesville.

The  77 recorded at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport in Gainesville eclipsed the previous record high of 73, which was set in 1981, according to WeatherUnderground.

The National Weather Service says record highs were also posted in Atlanta where it was 79.  The old record was 74, set in 2003.  It was 83 in Athens Thursday (78 in 1922), 84 in Columbus (80 in 1917), and 83 in Macon (81 in 1976).  The 84 that was recorded in Columbus also ties the all-time high for February in the west Georgia city, which had been reached four other times.

Unusually warm weather is expected to continue into the weekend but highs are expected dip into the 60s in most places with lows in the 40s, which is still a bit warmer-than-usual for this time of year.
