Wrestling: Jefferson, Commerce, Buford, North Hall dominate Sectionals

Defending Traditional wrestling state champions Buford, Jefferson, and Commerce put themselves in solid position to defend their titles after Saturday’s Sectionals.

Buford, the defending Class AAAAA champion, sent 12 into next week’s Traditional finals, including seven No. 1 seeds and two No. 2 seeds in a Sectional held at the Buford Arena. Jefferson, which has won 17 consecutive Traditional titles spanning four classifications, also sent 12 into the Class AAAA finals, including six No. 1 seeds and three No. 2 seeds in a Sectional held at The Arena in Jefferson. Commerce, which has won four straight Class A titles, moved 12 into the finals as well with eight No. 1 seeds in a Sectional held in Macon.

The Traditional finals will be held Feb. 8-10 at the Macon Coliseum.

But those three teams weren’t the only ones to have success during Saturday’s action. The Class AAA Sectional held at Greater Atlanta Christian saw several area teams send wrestlers to the finals.

North Hall, the reigning Class AAA Duals state champion, pushed 10 into the Traditional finals with seven No. 1 seeds and two No. 2 seeds included. Lumpkin County had six advance, including three No. 1 seeds. Jackson County had four, East Hall and Dawson County three each, and Union County had one advance.

At the Jefferson Sectional in Class AAAA, Chestatee and West Hall each had five wrestlers advance while White County had five move into the finals. Stephens County had three advance.

In the Class AAAAA Sectional at Buford, Flowery Branch had five move through to the finals while Johnson pushed three into the finals.

In the Class A Macon Sectional, Towns County had four advance while Riverside Military Academy had two advance to the finals.

In the Class AAAAAA Sectional at Lanier, host Lanier had three advance to the finals while Gainesville and Winder-Barrow had one each advance.

In the Class AA Sectional at Rockmart, Banks County moved three into the finals while Rabun County had one advance.
