Union County sets school record in romp over Oglethorpe

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter

LEXINGTON — Union County set a new-school record for consecutive wins Friday night with a 56-0 whitewash of Oglethorpe County in Region 8-2A action.

The victory for the Panthers (8-0, 4-0 Region 8-2A), their 10th straight, also clinched a showdown with arch-rival Rabun County (8-0, 4-0) on Nov. 2 for the region title. The old mark of nine straight wins had been set from Aug. 31 to Nov. 9, 2001.

“We’re very excited about the streak,” said coach Brian Allison, who was the coach of the Panthers in 2001 in his first stint in Blairsville. “This group may not be the most talented we’ve ever had but they work hard and play hard together. It’s a fun group to be around.”

Junior quarterback Pierson Allison tossed three touchdown passes, two to Chayton Shafer and one to Kyle Morlock. Chad Buzzard and Jonah Daniel each had a pair of touchdown runs. Kanon Hemphill also returned the opening kickoff of the second half 90 yards for a touchdown.

Union County will play host to Social Circle next week before its season finale against the No. 3-ranked Wildcats.

“We still have a lot of things to work on,” Allison said. “We’re playing okay but I think we can still get a lot better.”
