If first-day numbers are any indication, Georgia voters are greatly interested in the 2018 midterm election.
Statewide, the Secretary of State's Office reported 69,049 voters cast in-person advance ballots in Georgia on Monday, Oct. 15. That's compared to 20,898 votes cast on the first day of early voting in the 2014 midterm.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that advance voting is growing in popularity, with 58-percent of voters casting early ballots for the presidential election in 2016; two years before that, 37-percent cast early ballots.
In Hall County, Elections Registration Coordinator Terenda Sargent reported 1,216 early ballots were cast on Monday. She said as of 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, more than 500 voters had shown up to cast early votes for the day.
"Turnout was beyond anything we could have expected," Sargent said in an email. "This election is going to be a big one."
In addition, the Hall County Elections Office mailed more that 2,400 absentee ballots for the midterm election, according to Sargent. Hall County has approximately 118,000 registered voters.
The early voting period runs through Friday, Nov. 2. The mandatory Saturday election day is Oct. 27.
