Hall County Board of Education member Brian Sloan announced this week that he will not seek re-election to the Post 2 seat that represents south Hall County.
In a Tuesday afternoon Facebook Post, Sloan said he will finish out 2018 and, "look forward to having a new and focused Post 2 representative on the Board beginning in 2019."
Sloan, a pastor at Chestnut Mountain Church, wrote that rapid growth of the church had brought him to a, "crossroad."
"As a staff pastor with much to do, it is requiring much time and focus. And, as important as the Board of Education is, my first calling is, and has been to full time Church ministry," Sloan stated.
In announcing the decision, Sloan said he thinks he still has a good support base and would like to think he'd win if he entered the race.
"However, that is just not the wise thing for my family, Chestnut Mountain Church, the Hall County School District, or me," Sloan wrote. "The South Hall District will continue to be a complicated district with much growth. It needs good, solid representation and someone who can invest more time into it for the years to come."
Sloan, who has served on the board since 2007, said his decision was not a result of any controversy over redistricting for new high and middle schools in his part of the county.
"Certainly some of our votes and district line decisions did not please everyone. However, this decision has nothing to do with those issues," Sloan state, "I have always welcomed constituent input, and we all know that we will receive criticism every single time that we have to make changes to district lines."
Sloan said he planned to be and looked forward to being active on the board for the remainder of the year.
"The many programs of choice that are offered in the Hall County School District, various career pathways, the International Baccalaureate Program, and character building initiatives in academics and extra-curricular activities are just a small sampling of the things that I have been passionate about and thankful for," Sloan wrote in reflection on his time in office.
