Thanks to the snow and ice that roared through northeast Georgia, the second-to-last week of the regular season of the high school basketball schedule will be the busiest of the season.
And many of the contests set for this week, including plenty of make-up dates from the winter weather, will have big impacts on upcoming region tournaments.
Tuesday offers some monster showdowns. In Region 8-AAAAA, Buford heads to Flowery Branch where the girls teams are ranked and separated by just one game in the standings. In Region 7-AAA, East Hall travels to Greater Atlanta Christian, where the boys teams are separated by just one-half game. The Vikings knocked off the No. 1-ranked Spartans earlier in the season. And in Region 8-AA, Banks County entertains Elbert County in a showdown for first place.
On Friday, the White County girls and Marist will play for first place in the Region 7-AAAA standings in Cleveland. In Region 8-AAAA, the Jefferson boys will try to keep pace with St. Pius when they head to Watkinsville to take on Oconee County. The winner will essentially hold a two-game lead over the other for second place. The top two teams in 8-AAAA qualify for the state tournament.
