Medical helicopter airlifts toddler who was run over near Clarkesville

CLARKESVILLE — The Georgia State Patrol is investigating an incident in which a toddler was seriously injured after being run over by a vehicle on private property about 4:15 p.m. Thursday.

The incident happened at 4:16 p.m. at a home just east of Clarkesville and involved a black 1997 Jeep Wrangler and a 2-year-old girl, said Sr. Trooper Jason Stephens of GSP Post 7 in Toccoa.

Stephens said the Jeep was traveling south on a private drive when the little girl traveled in front of it. The driver did not see the child and the Jeep struck her with its undercarriage.

The toddler, who suffered serious upper extremity injuries, was flown by the Gainesville-based AirLife Georgia 2 helicopter to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Stephens said. After the child was stabilized for flight, that helicopter lifted off with her about an hour after the crash.

Stephens said he anticipates names of those involved and the location will be released Friday, adding no charges are expected since not all family has been notified.
