Region 8-A will get down to business in league play this week with some key matchups. And more than a few mouth-watering, non-region showdowns are also on tap for high school football fans in Week 2.
Lakeview Academy, coming off a huge win over Class AAA East Jackson (42-13), has perhaps the biggest potential to show it belongs amongst the elite courtesy a tough 8-A matchup at Athens Academy. The Lions (1-0, 0-0 Region 8-A) have beaten the Spartans (1-0, 0-0 Region 8-A) just once in their history but a win would give them plenty of star points in the Class A power ratings.
Commerce (1-0, 0-0 Region 8-A) also faces a tough road game at rejuvenated Hebron Christian (1-0, 0-0 Region 8-A), which is being led by former Indianapolis Colt and Peyton Manning teammate Jeff Saturday (Manning's former center in fact). The Tigers have never lost to the Lions. Towns County travels to George Walton Academy and Riverside Military heads to Providence Christian in another pair of key 8-A matchups.
In non-region action, none come bigger than Jefferson at Thomson in a battle of Class AAAA top-ranked teams. The fourth-ranked Dragons (2-0) dropped a pair of games to the second-ranked Bulldogs (2-0) last season, including in the semifinals in Thomson. They would love nothing better than to get some measure of revenge.
Rabun County travels to Stephens County in a battle for the farthest northeast corner of the state, while White County -- which owns two impressive wins to open the season and has already surpassed last year's win total -- travels to Habersham Central in an intriguing border battle.
