State: As kids go off to college, don't forget renters insurance

This past week, we saw move in days at Brenau University in Gainesville and the University of North Georgia in Oakwood and Dahlonega.

As your student goes off to college, sometimes important things are overlooked.

Not everyone who goes off to college lives on campus. That brings along with an element of risk.

Georgia Deputy Insurance Commissioner Jay Florence said when you are going down our checklist, don't leave off renters insurance.

"Certainly you could be the victim of theft that would take your personal belongings or you could renting an apartment that has a fire," Florence said. "And if your apartment is not insured, you would essentially lose all of your stuff and not have anybody there to help you get back on your feet."

Florence adds most insurance companies offer very inexpensive policies, and going without out could cost you and your youngster thousands or dollars.
