Gainesville: 3rd annual Pathway to Medical School program graduates eight

By AccessWDUN staff

Eight pre-med college students from across the state recently graduated from the Foothills Area Health Education Center’s Pathway to Medical School program.

The program is coordinated by Foothills AHEC in conjunction with Northeast Georgia Health System.  One of the largest components of the 180-hour program held in June is providing participants with 80 hours of clinical shadowing in primary care offices in northeast Georgia. This is made possible by physicians who volunteer to host students in their offices.

Northeast Georgia Physicians Group is a major contributor of clinical shadowing hours, donating more than 300 hours of time to host this year’s graduating class. One NGPG physician, Dr. Philip Kimsey, not only hosts students for clinical shadowing hours, but also serves as research project supervisor for the program, and serves as a Planning Committee member year round.   The Longstreet Clinic, P.C., donated more than 100 hours of clinical shadowing hours.  Planning Committee member Dr. Jeff Reinhardt hosted students for clinical shadowing in addition to participating in the Physician Roundtable dinner.

The 2017 class included Josiah Bennett, Auburn; Shannon Freeland, Monroe; Mason Garland, Hoschton; Jillian Jay, Stone Mountain; Monica Mohanty, Augusta; Nirali Patel, Macon; Rahil Patel, Lilburn; and Sarah Williamson, Lawrenceville.
