Gainesville: June rainfall well-above normal

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

Rainfall in June in Gainesville totaled 6.7 inches, well-above normal for the month, according to data recorded at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport.  In addition, it rained on three of the four weekends during the month.

Normal in Gainersville for the sixth month of the year is 4.13 inches.  Last June, rainfall fell below normal - totaling 3.44 inches.  For the year-to-date, rainfall in Gaineville is running about five inches above average.

As for the drought, as we reported last week, the U.S. Drought Monitor now says Georgia is virtually drought-free.

Lake Lanier continues to benefit from the rainfall, which was plentiful during the entire first half of the year.    The level of the lake Saturday morning was 1065.06, which is 5.94 feet below full pool (1071).  On January 1, it was 1060.27.  A year ago, it was 1067.49 and two years ago, 1069.13.

One other note about last June, the area, at the time, was caught in the midst of a heat wave that saw above normal temperatures for the month on 24 of 30 days.  This year that was true on only 10 days.
