GAINESVILLE — Some of the strongest women and men in the world will make their way to the Iron Beast Gym on Grove Street in Gainesville this weekend for the American Powerlifting Committee National Championships. Weigh-ins start on Friday with competitions scheduled on Saturday and Sunday. Various age and weight classes will be contested in raw and equipped divisions for full-power (squat, bench-press, deadlift) as well as push/pull (bench, deadlift) and the single lifts of bench-press and deadlift.
Opening ceremonies will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the lifting to start at 10:30 a.m. for weight classes 100 kilograms (220.46 pounds) and below. The heavier weight classes will compete Sunday, beginning at 10 am.
The Gainesville based Georgia IronDawgs with a roster full of national and world champions will be among the favorites for the team bench-press title. The 'Dawgs feature Gainesville’s Tim “T” Moon, the reigning Mr. Olympia champion and the world’s strongest bench-presser over the age of 50, with multiple world titles and records and an equipped lift of around 821 pounds to his credit.
“If everyone hits even close to their best lifts, we’ll be hard to beat,” said IronDawg team captain, R. Garry Glenn of Oakwood. “People need to come out and see how strong our home grown talent really is.”
The Iron Beast hosted the APC State Meet earlier this year, and is scheduled to host the Georgia Games Powerlifting competition next month. For more information visit the APC web-site.
