System-owned drug dog in Hall schools' budget plan

A school system-owned drug dog could be part of efforts to fight illegal drugs in the Hall County School District in the next budget year, according to a school official.

The dog is included in a $50,000 line item in the proposed FY 2018 budget, according to a news release from the district.  The dog would be capable of being in middle and high schools on a nearly daily basis, Gordon Higgins, Director of Community Relations and Athletics wrote.

The increased drug fighting effort also includes expansion of anonymous tip lines and other undercover operations.

"We will tirelessly do all that is within our abilities to keep our community's girls and boys safe, seeking every resource possible to keep the scourge of illegal drugs out of our schools," district superintendent Will Schofield said.

Two remaining public hearings for the overall budget are scheduled for Monday at 11:30 a.m. and at 6:00 p.m.  The board of education is expected to adopt a final budget and millage rate after the final hearing.
