Cornelia police seek anyone who can identify bank robbery suspect

CORNELIA — Cornelia Police Chief Chad Smith is asking for the public’s help identifying a man responsible for a bank robbery inside a grocery store in that city Wednesday afternoon.

“On April 26 at 2:30 p.m. the South State Bank branch located inside Ingles was robbed,” Smith said. “A white male in his early 60s, and approximately 5-foot-11, weighing around 260 pounds, partially bald with scruffy facial hair, enter Ingles, approached the bank tellers demanding money, claiming to be concealing a weapon.”

Smith said the man was wearing a striped plaid shirt, blue jeans and a dark baseball cap. He left the bank with an undisclosed amount of money.

When the man exited the store, he got into a small, dark-colored sport-utility vehicle.

Anyone who was in the store or in the parking lot who witnessed anything or can help identify the man in the surveillance photograph is asked to contact Cornelia Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division at (706) 778-4314.
