State DOT's HERO coverage now includes Hall County

By AccessWDUN staff

Georgia DOT’s Highway Emergency Response Operators (HERO) coverage has been extended into Hall County along Interstate 985.   Twelve miles from Spout Springs Road to Jesse Jewell/State Route 369 are now included.

That means that in GDOT's Northeast District, 24 miles of I-985 are now patrolled by HERO units.

In addition, GDOT has now expanded the coverage of the agency's new Coordinated Highway Assistance & Maintenance Program (CHAMP) to 64 miles of Interstate 85 in Northeast Georgia.

“This was the ideal time to extend the coverage to complement our CHAMP truck operators, who respond to maintenance needs and incidents on Interstate 85,” said Brent Cook, District Engineer for the Gainesville-based GDOT Northeast District Office.

HEROs and CHAMP operators provide support to law enforcement, assist in clearing stalled vehicles from travel lanes, and help stranded motorists with minor mechanical problems.

There is no charge for HERO or CHAMP services. Motorists can get assistance from these units by dialing 511.
