Officials in Mt. Airy request GBI for investigation of 'suspicious' death

MT. AIRY — Officials at the scene of a death investigation at a Mt. Airy home have requested investigative assistance from the state.

“Habersham County E-9-1-1 received a call at 7:45 p.m. Thursday for a medical unit to a residence of McConnell Street here in the town of Mt. Airy,” said Mt. Airy Police Chief Tim Jarrell, who was on scene.

Deputies from the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office responded, along with Habersham Emergency Medical Services.

“Upon arrival, they found a female who was unconscious and unresponsive,” Jarrell said.

The Habersham County Coroner’s Office also was notified of the death and responded.

“After examining the circumstances at the scene, Mt. Airy Police Department, the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office and the Habersham County Coroner’s Office came to the conclusion that it appeared to be suspicious and requested the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the GBI Crime Scene Unit.”

Jarrell is not releasing any further details about the female victim or the circumstances, pending the arrival of the GBI and citing the ongoing investigation.
