Football: Corky Kell will make more history with games at new Georgia State Stadium in 2017

By AccessWDUN

The 2017 MetroPCS Corky Kell Classic will offer up another first for state high school football fans.

The annual event, which has kicked off the prep football season every year since its inception in 1992, will hold games at the newly transformed Georgia State Stadium, formerly Turner Field for the Atlanta Braves.

The event will begin on Thursday, August 17 with a double-header at Mercer’s Five Star Stadium.

Friday and Saturday’s games will likely make history as the first games ever played in the newly transformed Georgia State Stadium. The Classic kicks off the highly competitive high school football season in Georgia every August with partial proceeds benefiting the Kell Foundation to fund scholarships.

Three northeast Georgia area teams -- Buford, Mill Creek and North Gwinnett -- are slated to take part in the 2017 Corky Kell Classic.

Buford is set to face Hillgrove at 8:30 p.m. Friday. Meanwhile Mill Creek will take on McEachern in a rematch of the 2016 Class AAAAAA quarterfinals at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday. North Gwinnett will close out the nine-game showcase with an 8:45 p.m. Saturday contest against Walton. Other games at Georgia State Stadium will Roswell vs. South Forsyth, Kell meeting Tucker, Archer and Gwinnett County rival Brookwood, and Norcross takes on Colquitt County.

At Five Star Stadium in Macon, Lee County will play Mary Persons, Houston County takes on Jones County.
