Driver faces DUI, serious injury charges after Sunday morning wreck near Cornelia

CORNELIA — A Mt. Airy man is facing charges after a wreck that occurred while he said he was attempting to make a cell phone call at 9:03 a.m. Sunday.

Joseph Reed of Mt. Airy was driving his Ford Fusion eastbound in the westbound lane of Camp Creek Road just outside Cornelia, negotiating a right curve, said Sgt. D.F. Lunsford of Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa.

“The driver of Vehicle 1 [Reed] indicated that he was attempting to make a cell phone call,” Lunsford said. “While being on the wrong side of the roadway, the right front bumper of Vehicle 1 struck the right front bumper of Vehicle 2.”

Vehicle 2 was a brown Kia Soul driven by Carolyn Waldon of Cornelia.

The Ford Fusion rotated clockwise after impact and came to rest partially in the westbound lane facing southwest. The Kia Soul rotated clockwise after impact, exited the westbound lane, and traveled across the eastbound lane to the south shoulder. The Kia continued southeast off the shoulder and down an embankment, striking a tree with the right rear bumper before coming to rest facing north.

Impact occurred in the westbound lane of Camp Creek Road.

Reed was charged with driving under the influence, driving on the wrong side of the roadway, no seatbelt and serious injury by motor vehicle.

Reed was transported to Habersham Medical Center and Waldon was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
