The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced Thursday morning that agents arrested three suspects in connection with the shooting death of Deputy United States Marshal Patrick Thomas Carothers of Flowery Branch.
Carothers was shot and killed by fugitive Dontrell Montese Carter on November 18, 2016 as he served an arrest warrant at a residence in Long County in South Georgia. Carter, 25, had been wanted for attempted murder of police officers, domestic violence and unlawfully discharging a weapon during an incident in September 2016 in Sumter County, South Carolina.
When Carothers was shot, other law enforcement on the scene opened fire and Carter was killed.
In a press statement, the GBI said at the residence where Carter was hiding, law enforcement also made contact and interviewed Ashley Chavon Roberts, 24, Levy Lewis Jenkins, 34, and Jeremy Lance Lewis, 32. The investigation found the three committed acts which hindered Carter’s capture.
As a result, each has been charged with one count of hindering apprehension or punishment of criminal (felony) and one count of felony murder in Carothers’ death.
Roberts and Lewis have been denied bond, according to the Long County Sheriff's Office.
"Jenkins is currently in a Georgia prison and these warrants will be served once arrangements for his transport to Long County are coordinated with the Georgia Department of Corrections," an email from the sheriff's office stated.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Atlantic Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office also assisted in the investigation, according to the GBI.
Carothers, who was 53 at the time he was killed, had served for 26 years with the US Marshals Service. He was Deputy Commander of the agency's Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force.
