Local students are among the winners in this year's Cesar Chavez Day Essay Contest, sponsored by the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials.
They and the other winners will be recognized at the 10th Annual Cesar Chavez Ceremony at the state Capitol March 31.
This year's ceremony will feature guest speakers that include Georgia State Representative Brenda Lopez, Emmanuel Diaz with Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraterinty, Inc., and Jerry Gonzalez, Executive Director of GALEO.
The purpose of the ceremony is to honor Cesar Chavez, and increase awareness of the plight of farm workers and their contributions to America, according to a GALEO press release. Chavez helped organize farm workers and founded what is today known as the United Farm Workers Union.
